Start with the mechanism
Options and auction mechanics can amplify a stock move even when the underlying business has not changed. Dealers adjust hedges, funds roll exposure, index trackers trade near benchmark prices, and closing auctions concentrate orders that were accumulated throughout the session.
These mechanics are observable only in pieces. Open interest does not show who owns each position, max pain is not a destination, and a high-volume close can reflect a scheduled rebalance rather than conviction. Good analysis treats structure as context around a catalyst, not a substitute for one.
